The Swazi Observer: "Tips on how to make you house more energy efficient
Install energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. They last up to eight times longer than ordinary bulbs and use 80% less energy. A 100 watts globe on for 10 hours uses 1 kilowatt, whereas a 14 watt CFL on for 70 hours uses 1 kilowatt.
Install a low-flow showerhead as it saves water and hot water bills.
Turn off appliances such as radios, TVs and microwave ovens at the wall plug when not in use. On average more energy is used to keep a microwave clock operating than is used for cooking. The standby mode of appliances consumes electricity. The consumption can be as high as 219 kilowatt hours per year for every appliance you have in your house. By turning off one appliance can save you about E200 per year and that is about 213kg of greenhouse gases."
